AP English Language and Composition (Masterful Writing II)
A Focus on Rhetoric
What makes AP English Language and Composition different from other high school English courses is its focus on rhetoric. While promoting writing in many contexts for a variety of purposes, the English Language course is the place where nonfiction texts and contexts take center stage. Here students think deeply about language as a persuasive tool and about the dynamic relationship of writer, context, audience, and argument. To best serve your students' learning, this course should focus primarily on nonfiction.
The College Board – AP Central
The AP English Language and Composition Exam tests students on works of non-fiction. Students prepare for this exam by studying how writers arguespecific positions and how their writing persuadesreaders. Students learn to recognize contextual writing which is directed toward a specific audience. Upon passing an AP exam, students frequently earn college credit. All colleges and universities look at AP scores in order to determine a student’s aptitude in a specific discipline.
Student Writing
Students must frequently practice interpreting and writing about a wide variety of prose styles from many disciplines and historical periods. Ultimately, students should feel comfortable analyzing the connections between writing and interpretive skill in reading. They should also be able to recognize and identify the increasing importance of graphics and visual images in texts published in print and electronic media. Students must learn to analyze how such images both relate to written texts and serve as alternative forms of texts themselves. Students should write often, at least once a week, under timed forty-minute conditions (similar to those in the actual AP exam).
AP English Literature and Composition (Masterful Writing III)
Among the most popular AP courses, AP English Literature challenges students to read and interpret a wide range of imaginative works. The course invites students to explore a variety of genres and literary periods and to write clearly about the literature they encounter. On a daily basis, it asks them to read critically, think clearly, and write concisely. By the end of the course, students have cultivated a rich understanding of literary works and acquired a set of analytical skills they will use throughout their lives.
The College Board – AP Central
This test deeply engages young minds with great literature and poetry. Students are prepared by learning from a variety of genres and periods, from the 16th century to the present. While students survey a variety of selections, several works of literary merit must be studied in depth. A substantial portion of the class must include poetry: nearly half of the AP Exam includes questions about verse! Upon passing an AP exam, students frequently earn college credit. All colleges and universities look at AP scores in order to determine a student’s aptitude in a specific discipline.
Student Writing
Students must consistently practice interpreting and writing about literature. Ultimately, students should feel comfortable analyzing the structure of a poem or story, the themes of a drama, or the style of an essay. They should also be able to identify various literary devices, such as figurative language or imagery, and to explain how those devices help to create meaning in a particular text. Students should write often, at least once a week, under timed forty-minute conditions (similar to those of the actual AP exam).
