Special Focus:
Adept at scholarship/essay contest development: "I take particular delight in finding scholarships and contests for my students. This is particularly important with my young scholars– 68% come from families who struggle to exist below the poverty line. I incorporate these challenges into my writing workshops."
Student Achievements:
The Posse Scholarship: The Posse Foundation identifies, recruits, and trains high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential to become Posse Scholars. These students receive four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships from Posse Partner Universities (including UCLA, Berkeley, and Tulane). "The program has expanded and I have not updated the most recent statistics, but as of last year (2011), Marshall, specifically from
my class, has had more scholarship recipients than any other public high school in Southern
California. This year, three of our seniors have earned this honor."
The College Board “Inspiration” Award: "Marshall Fundamental Secondary School won a $25,000 award and the 2003 “Inspiration” Award from The College Board because of our“outstanding efforts to overcome significant challenges to help students succeed in school and go on to college. Marshall Fundamental has been chosen to receive a College Board 2003 “Inspiration” Award for the nation’s most improved high schools.” I completed the exhaustive application and narrative essay and went out and solicited recommending letters from the editor of the Pasadena Star News and The Director of Public Events at Caltech."
Morehead Foundation Scholarship: "I was introduced to the Morehead Foundation, while studying at Duke University in 2000. The Foundation offers a $120,000 scholarship to those who are selected from Morehead eligible high schools and proceed successfully through a rigorous 4-month screening process. At the time, there were only eight Morehead high
schools in California– prep schools, like Harvard Westlake, University Prep, and Pasadena Polytechnic. I sent in an essay to the Foundation describing our school and received a
letter explaining that no new schools had been added in eighteen years. I mailed in 600 student signatures, asking that Morehead think of us in the future. Three months later (last April), I received a call stating that the committee had decided to add Marshall Fundamental to the
eligibility roster. For each of the past six years, our chosen student has been selected as a finalist and flown to North Carolina for four days of interviews. Four are now Morehead Scholars. Each award includes five summers of travel study (anywhere in the world), room, board, tuition, and a $9,000 per annum stipend, books, and laundry. The Morehead is the oldest and most comprehensive scholarship offered in North America."
Laws of Life Essay Contest: "We were renewed for four consecutive years. This marvelous
essay and art scholarship awards $5,000 per year to Marshall. I am the coordinator of this contest and the Joseph Family Foundation assures me that we hold the most impressive,
thorough and elegant competition and ceremony."
United Nations High School Essay Contest: "During the last three years, the three Pasadena Chapter first place winners were from my classes. The 2000 winner went on to take 2nd
place in the National United Nations competition. Last year’s winner is also one of the top ten National winners for 2002."
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Scholarships: "Of the fourteen scholarship recipients each year, six (on average) are from my senior class. Monetary awards are $1,200 for each student. Other
awardees include students from Pasadena Polytechnic, Notre Dame Academy, and Flintridge Prep. No school, except Marshall, had more than three winners."
Young Columbus Scholarship (Parade Magazine): "This contest is held by newspapers throughout the United Statesand sponsored by Parade Magazine. Each year, one hundred students (grades 8 – 12) are chosen to travel on a grand luxe nine-day vacation to a selected location abroad. This trip is worth $13,000. A student from my class has won for two years (2001 – Germany; 2000 – Ireland)."
Newsweek “My Turn” Essay Contest: "There are ten first place winners ($1,000 each) and ten honorable mentions throughout the United States. In 2001, one winner and one honorable mention (10%) were from my Advanced Placement Literature class."
Horatio Alger Society: "Two hundred winners throughout the United States are awarded $1,000 each. Three of last year’s Horatio Alger Scholars are from my senior English classes. This year’s winners are still pending."
